This eye-catching mural along Dunolly's Broadway celebrates the region's significant gold history, portraying the Deason and Oates families re-enacting the discovery of the Welcome Stranger - the largest alluvial gold nugget ever found!
This mural is a fantastic recreation of the iconic 1869 photograph "Unearthing the Welcome Stranger nugget".
In the photograph, the nugget's discoverers John Deason, Richard Oates, and their families posed with a large piece of quartz, which represented the Welcome Stranger gold nugget.
The mural was brought to life by artist
Biin, and was commissioned by the
Prospectors and Miners Association of Victoria. It is a fantastic addition to Dunolly's streetscape, and brings the region's rich heritage to light for anyone passing through the town.
The mural is located on the wall of the old GoldSearch building, across the road from the Dunolly Museum.
