Take a walk around the gorgeous Sanatorium Lake in Mount Macedon and discover the lake's fascinating history and ecology.
An Eco-Tourism Trail takes you on a self-guided tour around the
picturesque lake, and a self guided audio tour takes you on an immersive
journey through the area.
Sanatorium Lake was originally constructed to supply water to a sanatorium which was never built. It was planned to replace a smaller sanatorium which had been established a short distance down the mountain in 1899. The original sanatorium closed in 1910, and was later destroyed by fire.
Today Lake Sanatorium is a rich habitat for native wildlife, fish and frogs, and provides a drinking hole for mammals and birds.
