Features

Within the Greater Bendigo National Park, between Black Rock Road and Loesers Road, lies a large clearing which is great for free camping and RVs. There's plenty of room for pitching tents or parking caravans/motorhomes. There are no camping facilities aside from a basic fire pit, but this is a nice, peaceful spot with some interesting relics.

Along with bushwalking, cycling and birdwatching, you can also spend some time checking out the old Cornish boiler which lies right alongside the camping area. The boiler is covered in graffiti and sits beside a dam, as well as the remains of two small brick-lined vats which have been used as fire pits.

Boilers can be found discarded all over the Victorian Goldfields. A Cornish boiler has a horizontal cylindrical design constructed of steel plates. A furnace is located at the front and a single internal flue tube passes through the boiler. Once used to provide steam for steam-powered machinery, these enormous relics lie abandoned at many old mining and distillery sites throughout the region.

The Sandfly Road Dam is just a three minute drive from the Black Road Road camping area and is an attractive spot when full of water, particularly in the Spring when the wattle flowers are blooming. This dam is likely to be dry during summer.
