Within the Greater Bendigo National Park, between Black Rock Road and Loesers Road, lies a large clearing which is great for free camping and RVs. There's plenty of room for pitching tents or parking caravans/motorhomes. There are no camping facilities aside from a basic fire pit, but this is a nice, peaceful spot with some interesting attractions.

Along with bushwalking, cycling and birdwatching, you can also spend some time checking out the old mining relics which lie right alongside the camping area.

A Cornish boiler covered in graffiti sits beside a dam, as well as the remains of two small cyanide vats.

The Sandfly Road Dam is just a three minute drive from the Black Road Road camping area and is an attractive spot when full of water, particularly in the Spring when the wattle flowers are blooming.

  • Bushwalking is an excellent way to get outdoors and exploring nature.
  • Evidence of the mid-late 1800's gold rush can be found throughout the Victorian goldfields in the form of abandoned mine shafts and tunnels, mullock heaps, buildings and ruins, circular puddling troughs, remains of cyanide vats, and quartz kilns.
  • Camping is a great way to explore the Victorian Goldfields. Many campgrounds are located close to interesting attractions and historic sites, and the Goldfields region is certainly not lacking in fascinating things to discover.
  • Gold prospecting is the recreational act of searching for natural gold deposits in the ground using tools such as gold detectors, gold pans and gold sluices. The Goldfields region of Victoria is a popular destination for gold prospectors, with many of the world's largest alluvial gold nuggets found in the area!
