Features

Take a drive into the bushland north of St Arnaud and marvel at the incredible views over the Comstock Open Cut Mine.

This open cut has completely removed the top of what was once Stuart's Hill, which was originally a large quartz blow along the Nelson/Wilson's Hill line of reef.

There were several reefs here which contained gold and a little silver. Near the surface, gold up to 50oz to the tonne was recorded!

Several mining companies have worked this area since it was discovered in the 1850s, and the most recent mining at the site has resulted in this impressive open cut. This was dug by a company called Glenburn Manor. They picked up where the old timers left off, only this time using modern mining methods.

Information signs describing the site's history are set at the north and south ends of the Comstock Open Cut.

Lookout at Comstock Open Cut Mine

Visitors can appreciate the view over the Comstock Open Cut from a gravel parking area on the north end of the mine.

The Comstock Open Cut is very deep, and there is a very dangerous drop not far from the parking area. For safety, do not cross any fences or get too close to the open cut.

St Arnaud Gold Mining Trail

The Comstock Open Cut is stop number 20 on the fantastic St Arnaud Gold Mining Trail, a brilliant self-guided tour which takes you on a journey to twenty significant sites along three major lines of reef - the Nelson, New Chum and Bristol lines of reef.

Stop by the St Arnaud Visitor Information Centre and pick up a $5 booklet and map for the trail, and set out on an educational adventure across the St Arnaud Goldfield!
