Victorian snakes
There are about 27 species of snake in Victoria, the majority of which are venomous. Some species of snake are quite variable in their colour and markings*, making it difficult to identify them visually.
Snakes are shy and normally try to avoid people. They may become defensive (or aggressive) if they are surprised, disturbed or feel threatened.
If you wish to have a snake removed from your property, contact DEPI's Customer Service Centre and ask for a list of snake controllers in your area: 136 186
Snakes are protected under the Wildlife Act 1975.
Snakes are an important part of a healthy ecosystem; they help to reduce the populations of over-abundant pest species such as rats and mice.
