Decorated with exotic ornamental trees and surrounding by rolling fields, this is a very interesting cemetery to wander through.
Bench seating, rubbish bins and a toilet block are available for visitor convenience.
Children's graves
Something you may notice as you stroll among the headstones is the large number of children who have buried here during the mid 19th century.
Many headstones have long lists of young children and babies from a family who have been buried together, their parents joining them years later.
Life was difficult on the goldfields, and it was often the most vulnerable who succumbed to the harsh living conditions.
Cemetery Cypress
One of the ornamental trees at the Newstead Cemetery stands out dramatically - an enormous Cypress more than 100 years old which towers over the cemetery.
In classical antiquity, the cypress was a symbol of mourning and in the modern era it remains the principal cemetery tree in both the Muslim world and Europe.

Standing as a dramatic monolith in the flat landscape of this small rural cemetery, this tree is notable for its
upright and compact crown. It is an outstanding example of a species commonly planted in Victorian cemeteries.
Other species in the cemetery include Washingtonia robusta, Washingtonia filifera, Nerium oleander and
Cotoneaster spp.
