The Steiglitz Pioneer / Old Cemetery is located alongside the St Thomas' Catholic Church in the fascinating old gold mining town of Steiglitz.
Established in 1854, the Steiglitz Pioneer Cemetery was in use until 1860. Only one headstone remains in the old cemetery today.
A wooden fence encloses the area, and a gravel path leads from the church side of the cemetery through an open gateway to the solitary grave.
The headstone displays the following text:
Erected by
William Paterson
COX
In memory of
Robert DUNCANSON
Who lost his life
by accident on
The Steiglitz Goldfields
May 18th 1857
Aged 27 years
The main Steiglitz Cemetery is located further down the road on the other side of town, and is still in use today.
