Campgrounds where you can swim in the Victorian Goldfields

One of the best ways to spend a weekend during summer is to pack your bags and head out on a lake or riverside camping trip! We've got some great campgrounds where you can swim throughout the Victorian Goldfields, take a look through the following list and start planning your next weekend away.

1. Lake Burrumbeet Foreshore Camping Area, Burrumbeet VIC


Pitch a tent along the shore of the beautiful Lake Burrumbeet, just twenty minutes from Ballarat, and settle in for a weekend of swimming, fishing or boating! Free camping is permitted along the lake's foreshore, and long drop toilets are available for visitor use. You'll find plenty of shady spots beneath the large trees to set up your camp chair and relax, while keeping an eye out for the Lake's many resident pelicans. Click for more information...

3. Laanecoorie - River Recreation Reserve, Laanecoorie VIC


The Laanecoorie River Recreation Reserve is a fantastic campground along the Loddon River in the quiet town of Laanecoorie. A popular place for boating, fishing and swimming, this riverside campground contains multiple picnic tables, wood fire barbecues, water taps, rubbish bins and toilets. 4. Bealiba Reservoir Recreation Area, Bealiba VIC


The Bealiba Reservoir Recreation area is a fantastic spot for camping, picnics, fishing, swimming, bushwalking and birdwatching. Multiple campsites are located around the reservoir, with picnic tables, fire pits and toilets available. Click for more information...


5. Rocky Crossing, Goornong VIC

Rocky Crossing, Goornong VIC

Rocky Crossing is a picturesque spot on the Campaspe River, where the water rushes through a shallow, rocky section creating swirling rapids and a few seasonal rockpools. A day visit parking area sits to the left of Rocky Crossing Road, and to the right is a free camping area which stretches along the bank of the river offering beautiful views over the water. Englishs Bridge Streamside Reserve is a great swimming and camping spot along the Campaspe River, just half an hour from Bendigo. Set up camp and take a dip alongside the bridge, bring the rods for an afternoon of fishing, or head off on a kayaking adventure down the scenic river. Click for more information...


7. Greens Lake, Corop VIC

Greens Lake is a popular lake-side campground in Corop Vic, just under an hour from Bendigo. This is a great spot for swimming, boating, and fishing, with plenty of space to set up camp along the shore. Click for more information...


8. Hunts Bridge Camping Area, Morrisons VIC


A local favourite for swimming and picnics, the Hunts Bridge Camping Area is sprawled along the bank of the gorgeous Moorabool River in Morrisons, half an hour from Ballarat. With plenty of space for tents, RVs and caravans, there are many great spots to set up camp in the huge clearing along the roadside, and a few more campsites down along the water. 9. Aysons Campground, Burnewang VIC

Aysons is a fantastic free camping area along the Campaspe River, 40 minutes from Bendigo. The campground has all the benefits of being situated beside a large river including plenty of swimming spots, fish, a boat ramp, beautiful views and an opportunity for birdwatching. 10. Colbrook Reservoir, Colbrook VIC

Colbrook Reservoir, Colbrook VIC

One of the most beautiful lakes in the Victorian Goldfields, Colbrook Reservoir is an amazing place for bushwalking, swimming, bush camping, and photography. Featuring a stunning dam wall complete with seasonal waterfall, this place is a must-see when exploring the beauty of the Wombat State Forest. There are a couple of great clearings for camping, swimming and fishing around the reservoir over on the opposite side to the dam wall. Please note that there are no facilities here, visitors must be self-sufficient and take all their rubbish with them when they leave. Four wheel drive vehicles are required to reach this spot.
